On the back of a very successful 2020 for mobile gaming companies in India, companies such as GameZop, Games 24×7 and Delhi-based WinZo Games are all looking to foray into the Western markets in order to diversify their user base and find more ways to generate revenue.
The Indian gaming industry grew leaps and bounds over the last year. According to analytics firm, Sensor Tower, India accounted for 17% of the world’s downloads of mobile games in the first 9 months of 2020 with a total of 7.3 billion downloads! That said, while the Indian market does bring a large amount of users for these firms, it’s known to be tougher to monetize. Western markets, on the other hand, offer fewer users but more opportunities for monetization.
CEO and Co-Founder of Games24x7, Trivikraman Thampy said, “The Indian gamer loves to play free-to-play games on Google Play but doesn’t spend. The massive popularity of skill games tells you that Indian gamers love to match their wits against others in games of skill. We continue to be big believers in India’s skill gaming space and will continue to invest there. Our expansion into the overseas market will certainly help augment the monetization given that most casual games are universal in their appeal.”
Their competitors GameZop and WinZo are also looking to expand their horizons in the gaming sector. GameZop has said that they have 2400 apps and websites running currently with the aim to increase that number to 5000 in 2021! WinZo has set up a fund worth $6.5 million to “support the gaming community globally.”
While Games 24×7 plans to focus on the North American market, Gamezop said that it will use its Series A funding round to take products to “key markets” in South-East Asia and Latin America. Manish Agarwal, CEO of Nazara Technologies has said that the company already has customers in North America, West Asia, Africa and South Asia. The company will expand its esports business in Africa and West Asia this year.
2021 is going to be a big year for everything related to gaming in India. Hopefully we can see the industry achieving its full potential in the country as well expand over to other parts of the world!
