In spite of being an old fashioned game, Ludo King was able to cross over 100 million downloads. It was the top free game on the Play Store and App Store! As Ludo is a childhood game for many, familiarity and emotional connect rekindled people’s interest in the game.
The Rise Of Among Us
Released in 2018, Among Us is also one of the games that came into prominence during the lockdown. The game attracted some of the biggest streamers and content creators like Ninja and PewDiePie.
According to Sensor Tower, it took the top spot for downloads in October 2020. India accounted for 15% of the total downloads, while the U.S. contributed 11.6%. Among Us was also the most watched game on streaming platform Twitch in September. At the Game Awards 2020, Among Us took the award for ‘best multiplayer game’ and the ‘best mobile game of 2020’
The game allowed streamers and content creators to collaborate together and play the game together. U.S Representative, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez played the game with famous streamers on Twitch to encourage more people for the US 2020 elections. She had over 400,000 viewers on the stream making it one of the most viewed Twitch streams!
A lot of games took off in 2020, registering record engagement from audiences, PUBG’s story was completely different. The Indian Government banned the game in September due to tensions between India and China. The apps were subjected to a ban under Section 69A of the Information and Technology Act.
The government said,
“These applications are banned due to their engagement in activities, which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of the state and public order.”
Following which, the game terminated all services and access for Indian users from October 30,2020. Chinese tech conglomerate Tencent holds a 10% stake in PUBG’s parent company. Only some days after the ban, PUBG Corporation, the parent company of PUBG Mobile, severed ties with Tencent. Since then, PUBG has been trying to make a comeback in a new avatar, but is yet to release the green light from the government.
Fortnite vs Apple
Epic Games’ Fortnite has been in the news for clashing with Apple. Apple removed the game from its App Store in August due to Epic Games introducing their own payment system within the game itself, bypassing Apple’s App Store rules! In response to this, Epic sued Apple and Google. Google had also removed Fortnite from the Play Store for not following its in-app purchase rules. Apple counter sued Epic and now await trial which is expected to take place in 2021.
Epic has since launched campaigns to boycott Apple products through special tournaments. There were reports of Fortnite coming back to Apple in the near future as part of Nvidia’s streaming game service. Nvidia and Epic said the game will return to iPhone through web browser Safari, which is not subject to Apple’s billing requirements.
The Last Of Us Part II
Possibly one of the best video game tales of all time, Naughty Dog’s long awaited sequel to the popular franchise took up a record NINE awards at the Game Awards 2020. The game is a narrative of a zombie outbreak through the experience of a young girl, Ellie. Known as a story of grief and anger, the game features characters from several racial backgrounds and trans characters. It features strong female characteristics despite the trolls. The game contains excessive violence which can be a turnoff for some people. However, the themes portrayed and the storyline depicted have left a significant impact on the people who have experienced it. The game was released in June this year and was one of the best-selling Sony PlayStation 4 games with over four million units sold on the release weekend.

Of course, without mentioning the fact that poker has also seen an incredible rise in terms of number of players and time spent on poker platforms, hopefully, 2021 can carry on the trend of making gaming the biggest entertainment industry in the world!
