Everyone was looking to start the new decade on the front foot but the novel coronavirus outbreak has caused all positive steps initiated by the people to be retracted. All of the major poker events planned for the year have been cancelled or shifted online. Players have had to cancel their flight and hotel bookings because of the restrictions put on by the governments.
Another one to bite the dust is Kindred Groups Unibet Poker. With three land based poker tournaments lined-up for the year, they’ve now had to move all three to the online felts. The website quotes,
“The games are not cancelled, but they will be re-homed within the independent online poker client.”
In addition to this, there will also be Fall and Winter Unibet Open Online series in September and December, but the dates haven’t been finalized yet.
Their new merged Unibet Online Series VIII will boast the biggest prize pool in the operator’s history. A total of 132 events with €1 million GTD up for grabs including the huge €1100 buy-in Unibet Open Main Event on 24th May. The series will run from 1st-24th May.
Unibet Poker, Head of Events, Nataly Sopacuaperu said,
“This is not a decision we have taken lightly, we fully understand the impact to our partners and the land-based venues, however, as a priority, we must consider not only the health of our customers but also the difficulty for recreational players with regards to planning trips around uncertainty.”
Their Head of Poker, Kristoffer Bergvall, had This to Say,
“We know some people will be disappointed, the team here certainly is, we love the live events! That said, we are all in agreement that this is the best way to ensure the consistency and reliability that people have come to expect from our product, and the online room is better equipped than ever to house our land-based fans.”
Satellites for these events have already been running!
