Random Number Generator: What It Is And How It Works

Most people around you will tell you that poker is a game of luck and to some extent they are right. It is usually played in casinos alongside other luck-based games such as blackjack, slots and craps. But the people who play poker professionally know how to get rid of that luck factor. During a live session of poker, the cards are shuffled by the dealer and dealt, therefore making it completely random as to how the cards are distributed. However, on online gaming platforms, they use random number generator softwares to get cards randomly.

What is RNG?

Random Number Generator is a technology designed to get a sequence that doesn’t have any pattern, therefore appears to be random. It helps generate a series of numbers or symbols that cannot be predicted. In poker, random sets of numbers are generated before placing cards. After an entire deck is made in this fashion, it’s used for that hand only. The cards are shuffled before the start of every hand. The random numbers of the previous hand are discarded and new ones generated before the shuffle.

How It Works:

To begin with, a RNG needs a ‘seed’, as the initial point for sequences of randomly spawned numbers to start out. The initial seed should also be such that any repetitive pattern should be avoided so that any sequences that the seed generates should be impossible to predict or calculate.  This is the reason why the seed itself is calculated using completely random figures. For a given operation, the seed could also be calculated using the network activity at a specific instant, the time of the day, and a number of other other parameters in varying combinations.

RNG’s are used for strong programs designed around an encrypted function. They’re made in such a way that no two seeds have an equivalent resulting random sequence. This leads to an output that can’t be accurately predetermined, thus ensuring the possibilities in play during a given online poker game remains unbiased.

If the RNG of a poker website is compromised by a player, he’ll be able to tell what comes on the flop, the turn and the river, giving him an unprecedented advantage over the other players. Hence, the auditing of the RNG is completed by independent licensed firms, and its integrity is verified on a daily basis.
